Reflections on dialogue

Allan Janik

pp. 13-15

The re-emergence of dialogue is seen as part and parcel of an attempt by some AI scientists to place information technology, "expert systems", etc., into some sort of proper perspective. This dramatic re-emergence is rooted in the need to understand the role of thought and experience in working life, particularly in Sweden with its commitment to industrial democracy. One of the most significant implications of the Dialogue Seminar is that it demonstrates to those of us who are not content to be passively "post-modern" the central position of dialogue in a critical appropriation of the fruits of modern science and technology.
